FAQ

  • How To Measure

WIDTHS - If your dog's neck is 13 inches or less, or they're a delicate breed, we strongly recommend going with the 3/4ths width. We use thick material and solid metal hardware, so our collars are a bit heavier than a standard nylon and plastic collar that you might find in a pet store. If your pup is a toy breed or just very delicate in general, our gear may not be the best option for them given the weight and thickness.

TRADITIONAL BUCKLE COLLARS - Measurements are based on where the holes are placed on the collar. So the Large for example, is listed as fitting 16-19 inches, which means that there are holes placed evenly at 16, 17, 18 and 19 inches around. We generally recommend that you choose a size that will fit your dog on one of the middle holes, so that there's a little wiggle room on either side for coat and weight changes. If you don't see a good fit for your pup from our standard sizes, please message us about custom sizing!

MARTINGALE AND SLIP COLLARS - Please measure carefully as these are custom made for your pup, and non adjustable. The measurement you give, ex: 18 inches, will be the entire inner circumference of the collar when sitting relaxed, not pulled tight. Measure your dog's neck with a soft measuring tape, placing the tape around the area where your dog wears their collar, or you can take your pup's current collar off, do it up to the size where they comfortably wear it, and then measure the inside circumference with a measuring tape. It's also a good idea to try sliding the collar on and off at that size while done up, to make sure that it will fit over their head. If your pup has a wider head than neck or you prefer a looser fit, you may want to add an extra .5 to 1 inch to your measurement. If you are unsure about measuring or just want a second opinion, please send us a message! We are always here and happy to help you find the perfect fit.

    QUICK RELEASE BUCKLE COLLARS
    - Please measure carefully as these are custom made for your pup, and non adjustable. The measurement you give, ex: 18 inches, will be the entire inner circumference of the collar done up, with a bit of give for a comfortable fit. Measure your dog's neck with a soft measuring tape, placing the tape around the area where your dog wears their collar, or you can take your pup's current collar off, do it up to the size where they comfortably wear it, and then measure the inside circumference with a measuring tape.

HANDS FREE LEASHES - To find the length that’s best for your body shape, height, and your dog’s walking style, grab something long, like a length of string, and try wrapping it around yourself in the way you intend to wear your leash, on your waist or crossbody. Once you have it in place, take the other end and tie it to your dog’s collar. Does it give your dog enough room for sniffing? Can you move comfortably? Try adjusting it to be longer or shorter a foot at a time until you find the ideal fit for you. Don’t forget to consider what kind of walks you’ll mostly be using it for, on city walks you might want something shorter for a close heel, and for trail walking you might want a bit of extra length so that your pup can explore further.

TRAFFIC LEASH - Have your dog stand at your side, next to your knees. Clip their current leash to their collar, and then move your hand up the leash until you find the length that gives you a comfortable heel without having to bend over.

  • Materials & Hardware

MATERIAL - We use Super Heavy Duty Biothane for all of our products. With a break strength of over 1000lbs and a soft, flexible coating, Biothane is ideal for all breeds, and all weather conditions. Mud, water, sand and grime will wipe cleanly off the material with ease, meaning no lingering bacteria or dingy fabrics! Available in 31 vivid, no fade colours, there’s a perfect shade for every occasion. *Our gear is designed to stand up to even the toughest natural elements, but harsh chemicals such as skunk spray, pen or adhesive can stain Biothane.*

HARDWARE - Brass is our most popular finish, for good reason! Classic and bright, brass compliments any colour you choose, and holds up quite well to water use, as long as you follow the cleaning guide. Brass is great for durability and longevity, but as with all brass, (including fine jewelry) the metal will react with the air over time in a natural process called oxidation, which forms a fine, greyish/green carbon. It's quite easy to polish up with a soft cloth, but if you order a martingale collar for a dog with light fur at the neck, it may leave a line as the carbons rubs off! This generally doesn't happen with the buckle collars or slips, only the martingale style where the metal sits directly on the fur. In the description we mention this and suggest that white and blonde pups may prefer to go with our nickel hardware upgrade instead, since nickel doesn't oxide like brass. If you already have a collar with brass, giving the hardware a quick polish with a soft cloth every now and again should help reduce carbon build up and lessen transfer to your pup's fur. *All gold hardware is solid brass except the quick release buckles, which are brass plated.

Nickel - Nickel is a great choice on cooler tones, it really pops on blues, greens and black! Nickel is slightly lighter weight than brass, so it’s a good option if your dog has a more delicate neck. We also recommend it if you’re ordering a martingale collar for a dog with light or white fur at the neck, since it oxidizes much less than the brass does.

Black Hardware - Black hardware is a powder coated nickel or brass. It’s especially eye-catching against brighter or lighter colours! While our clients have found that the black holds up quite well over time, it must be kept in mind that this is still a coated material, so it can be scratched by sharp objects. A little black nail polish is a quick and easy way to hide a scratch, but if you’re looking for an option that won’t show any wear, we recommend the brass or nickel.

Galaxy Chrome - A dramatic blend of deep purples, cosmic greens, and cool chrome blues, the finish on this metal is out of this world! A true chameleon, Galaxy Chrome will reflect differently based on which colour you choose to pair it with. This finish has held up extremely well in all of our prolonged outdoor testing, but since it is a coated metal like the black hardware, some wear is possible over time. For long term salt water exposure, the solid brass hardware option may be preferred.

  • Cleaning & Safety

TO CLEAN - simply rub a scrubby sponge with a little bit of dish soap along the collar. For super smelly substances, add a spritz of white vinegar to the water for extra odour neutralization.
*Make sure to rinse and dry all hardware thoroughly after swimming or washing.

SAFETY - Safety and durability are top priority at Goodwolf. We use 100% super heavy duty Biothane material and durable, thoroughly tested hardware for all of our products. Our collars are made with ruff and tuff play in mind, and can withstand a heck of a beating. But to be extra cautious with the safety of your best friend, please inspect your equipment regularly for any signs of wear and tear. GoodWolf cannot be held liable for any injuries resulting from the improper usage of products.

  • Shipping & Processing Times

SHIPPING INFO - All orders are shipped via tracked mail. For the safety of your package, we do not offer a discounted untracked option. Orders to Canada and the U.S generally take between 4-8 business days to arrive. Overseas orders will take longer, (it can take up to 1.5 months for Australian packages!) as it takes time to be cleared through customs and transferred to your local postal service. If you don't see your country on the list of places we ship to, feel free to reach out for a custom shipping quote! (These are estimates only and don’t apply to the busy holiday season in November-December. If you’re buying a gift or have a specific timeline, please reach out to us first to check if it’s doable.)

PROCESSING TIME - Our processing time is between 1 to 2 weeks. This is the time period that it takes for us to handcraft your order here in our shop, and does not include the shipping time. We do try to send out orders as quickly as possible, so your wait time may be far shorter than two weeks, but quality is our utmost priority, so during busy times for the shop, it can take up to the full two weeks to ensure that your new gear is absolutely perfect, and ready to take you on years of adventure. If you have a specific time frame in which you need an item, we encourage you to reach out to us first to check on our current schedule.

  • Returns & Exchanges

As we are a small shop and hand make each item to order, we do not accept returns or exchanges. If you’re unsure about sizing, please read the handy sizing guide listed in our FAQ section before ordering! If you’re still not sure, feel free to send us a message, we are more than happy to help you find the perfect fit the first time around. However, if there is an issue or defect with your item, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us, we stand behind our gear 100% and will always correct a mistake if made on our end.

  • Additional Questions

Can I modify my order after placing it? If you change your mind on sizing or colours right after ordering, we can usually accommodate the change. However we often start creating your order within a few hours, so we can’t guarantee that we’ll always be able to modify an order after purchasing.

If I place an additional order before my first order ships, can you package and ship them together? Yes! We’re happy to combine orders together for you, just send us a message.

What width is best for my dog? For collars, we generally recommend that the 1 inch width will work best for dogs who are 14+ inches around the neck. For pups who measure 13 inches or less, we recommend going with the 3/4ths width. We use thick material and solid metal hardware, so our collars are a bit heavier than a standard nylon and plastic collar that you might find in a pet store. If your pup is a toy breed or just very delicate in general, our gear may not be the best option for them given the weight and thickness.

Can you tell me what size to order? While we are always here to help, it’s tough for us to give an accurate recommendation without knowing your pup or having any measurements to work from! Once you’ve read through the handy sizing guide located in our FAQ and have taken your dog’s measurement, if you’re still unsure about the size, just send us a message and the team will be happy to chat it over with you and offer our best advice.

I just realized I put down an old/incorrect address. Can you fix this? It happens! If your order hasn’t been shipped yet, we can usually edit the address for you. If your order has been shipped, there are a few options. If you’re in the U.S, you can take your tracking number and register for a Package Redirect on the USPS website. If you’re in Canada, your best bet will be to reach out to the occupants of the property and ask them to hold your package for you.

My tracking number says delivered, but I don’t see my package. What should I do? It's hard for us to speculate on where it could be since we’re not there, but there are a few steps you can take!

The first - verify the shipping address on your order receipt. Is it correct? If a unit number, direction (East, West, etc) or street number is missing or incorrect, your package won’t be deliverable. If it's an address from a previous residence, you'll need to get in touch with the new residents at the address.

If your address is right, the next step is to check around on your front porch/front of house/neighbors porches. Mail carriers often try to tuck small packages away behind pots or benches to keep them safe from package thieves. Another good idea is to check with your close neighbors to see if someone else grabbed it by mistake. We ship our orders in a bright gold package, so it would be easy for your neighbors to spot in their mail.

If none of that works, for Candians: the best thing to do is go to your nearest Canada Post counter, and give your direct CP tracking number to the staff and explain the situation. Your actual mail carrier picks up mail batches from that location every day, so they will be able to speak with him/her directly to ask, as well as check the back room to see if it came back to the post office. Since they know your route and serve your neighborhood, they tend to be a lot more friendly and helpful than the Canada Post phone in customer service staff.

For Americans: USPS scans the GPS location of every package upon delivery, so you can take your tracking number to your local post office, and they’ll be able to confirm the exact coordinates of where your package was left.

If your question still hasn't been answered, please don't hesitate to reach out via the website chat box, email, or Instagram, we're always happy to talk all things canine!
